DEMAND FOR PRODUCTION INTENTION OF STATUTE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Holding that defendant's action did not come within the Statute, Mr. E. Page, S.M., in a reserved judgment read in the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court to-day, dismissed a charge of failing to produce his driver's licence which was laid by the Lower Hutt Borough Council against Pierce James Carroll, a taxi-driver.

The evidence was that defendant, while driving a motor-vehicle, was stopped by an inspector, who informed him that his speed had exceeded the limit. He was not asked to produce his driver's licence. That afternoon the inspector wrote asking him to produce his driver's licence at the borough office within 48 hours in connection with the offence committed by him in the morning. "I do not think that the section throws on a person driving a motorvehicle the duty of journeying to or of posting his licence to the office of any local authority that may write to him asking him to produce it there," said Mr. Page. "Suppose a man should motor from Auckland to Wellington, would he be "bound, at the request of every or any local authority through whose district he had passed, to produce at its office his licence for inspection? I do pot think so. I think that the section contemplates a demand on him in person.."
