MISS BATTEN'S GIFT

Sir,—l was very pleased to see that at least one 'member of the House has had the courage to question the Prime Minister regarding the Government's spontaneous gift of £SOO to Miss Batten. While agreeing that the country owes some tangible recognition to this heroine upon her achievement, I do think that £250 would have been an adequate gift, especially as Miss Batten is also the guest of the Government during her stay in New Zealand. It seems .a great pity that the Government is not more often willing and prompt to add a few extra £soo's to the already insufficient war pensions of many of our neglected heroes. L. Paulson.
