SHORTER SEASON THIS YEAR , INCREASE IN PIG TRADE [bt telegraph OWN correspondent] GISBORNE. Wedneaday The freezing season in Gisborne has now practically closed, the Kaiti works having sufficient bookings for one more day's killing next week, and, so far as is known, nothing moro will be offering except perhaps some pigs. The season has been much shorter this year than last year. The Kaiti works did not close last year until the end of July, and, in fact, small killings extended into the beginning of August. An early start was made last spring, but the poor fattening conditions left insufficient stock for slaughter, and killings were suspended for about a fortnight. A busy autumn was experienced, but an early winter had the inevitable effect of reducing the number of winter fat stock available. The Kaiti works this season have dealt with approximately 490,000 sheep and lambs, compared with 546,000 during the previous season. Tho cattle dealt with were approximately the same number, but there was a remarkable increase in pigs, which rose from under GOOO to approximately 10,000.
