TOURNEY AT AKARANA WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP COLTMAN DEFEATS RALPH Tho open tournament of the Akarana Golf Club was commenced on Saturday. Playing conditions wore rather difficult owing to tho wot weather. Tho championship and handicap tournament have reached the semi-final stages and a great surpriso was G. Coltman's defeat of W. S. Ralph, 1 up. There was little between the players, with the exception that Coltman's putting was faultless, whereas Ralph never quite got the strength of the greens. Some notable competitors are taking part, including five Kirk-Windeyer Cup players, all of whom, besides two other scratch players, qualified. Among the supprises in yesterday's play wns tho defeat of Brinsden by Silk and that of J. L. Black by a local player, Campbell-Heard. The semi-finals will be played to-morrow morning, tho draw being:—Hornabrook (Masterton) v. Guy Home (Hutt), Horton (Masterton) v, Silk (Wauganui). Golf of a good standard lips been witnessed. as was evidenced by the fact that Hornabrook, with rounds of 70 nnd 71, headed the list of (hose who qualified, his score being 14 strokes better than that of last year's lender.
