HIGH CHARGES ALLEGED The necessity for reducing costs as a primary step in assisting tho farming industry was stressed by Mr. H. 0. Mellsop in his presidential address at tho Auckland provincial conference of the New Zealand Farmers Union sC "One matter of reduced costs which needs investigation," said Mr. Mellsop, "is the excessive charges for shipping produce between tho North and South Islands, which is of vital consequence to poultry farmers and orchardists." Lemons sold in the North at (3d a dozen cost 4s to 5s in South Island towns, and as a result lemons from Italy could compete with the Dominion's products. 'I he price of wheat and wheat products also was excessively high, duo to handling costs, said Mr. Mellsop.
