TO-DAY'S FINE ISSUE STRIKING ILLUSTRATIONS PROGRESS OF GISBORNE To-day's publication of the Weekly News is another highly interesting issue of the world-famous national illustrated journal. In addition to tlio usual attractive illustrations and topical general items included in the number, a considerable amount of space is devoted to a fine special feature illustrating tho growth, resources and attractions of tho town of Gisbornc, progressive portal of the Poverty Bay district. The position of Gisbornc to-day as an important modern commercial centre is especially interesting in view of tho fact that it was here that Captain Cook first landed on New Zealand soil IGS years ago. The descriptive outline of the district given by picture and story in this number makes a very attractive feature.

An arresting double page of tho central pictorial section is devoted to threo comprehensive views of Gisbornc illustrating its growth from a blockhouso settlement at the time of To Kooti's raids to a flourishing town. The frontispiece, a striking photograph of a largo mob of sheep 011 the road from Gisbornc, bears tho caption, "Wealth from the Poverty Bay district." Illustrating the attractions and resources of the district are two splendid full pages. One is devoted to bright scenes at a recent meet of tho Poverty Bay Hunt Club. Conducted over difficult country, tho hunts in this district call for keen and hard riding, as can bo seen in theso excellent photographs. The other page comprises interesting views of some of tho many fine sheep stations and homesteads in the fertile East Coast district. Further general pictures, showing the old and tho modern Gisbornc, are included in this feature. The usual wealth of miscellaneous illustrations is contained in tho pictorial section and in tho news pages of the issue. Among these are: —Damage wrought by cyclone at New Plymouth; winter scenes in Wellington and Canterbury; record fruit exports from Nelson; progress of the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme; another victory for brilliant Harold Logan; amateur operates in the south; schoolboy skiers at Mount Cook; wrestling in Wellington; tho opening of tho Ruawaro douhlo murder trial; tragedy of the sea narrowly averted; New Zealand golfers in Britain. A bright page of snapshots taken during last week's jubilee celebrations at Elthnm, Taranaki, completes a very fine illustrated section. Notes 011 boxing, wrestling, athletic sports and racing are continued in tho sporting section of the issue. "Archer's" article this week, discussing and summarising tho racing prospects for tho winter season, is of special interest to racegoers.
