SUSTENANCE PAYMENTS
PALMERSTON NORTH PROTEST AUCKLAND SUPPORT SOUGHT A request that the Mount Eden Borough Council should pass a resolution protesting against the action of the Unemployment Board in putting into operation,-in Palmerston North, the payment of sustenance to unemployed at reduced rates, in place of employment, was received by the council last evening from the Mayor of Palmerston North. The weekly sustenance payments in Palmerston North were stated to range from os for single men to 20s for married men with five or more children. The scheme of sustenance operated one week in four. "I ask you to support tho citizens of Palmerston North in the endeavour to iiuorove the lot of the unemployed in this Dominion," wrote the Mayor of Palmerston North, "an I feel sure that what has been introduced here will be brought into operation throughout the Dominion unless strong representations are made to the Government objecting to the system.'' The letter was received, no action being taken. An improved allowance to relief workers for whom no work can be obtained was announced last week by Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of employment in tho Auckland district. Sustenance payments in Auckland now range from 10s a week for single men to 2'is Gd to 26s for married men with three or more children.
