YOUNG MAORI'S DEATH
VERDICT OF SUICIDE [by TKLKGKAI'H OWN correspondent] TAUMAKUNUI, Saturday An inquest concerning the death of Wati ltoku, a Maori, aged 21 years, whose body was found in a paddock at Waimiha on Wednesday, was held by the coroner, Mr. A. S. Laird. Polly Tapu, a native girl, aged 15 years, stated that she had been friendly with deceased for some time. Her father objected,"saying she was too young. On May 13 she went to Rehu's hut just after dark and stayed with him for some time. He said he might be going away, but did not say anything about killing himself. Tapu To stated that at noon on May 13 ho sent for Wati. llehu to tell him he did not want him to keep company with witness' daughter any more. Pehu said nothing, but just went away. Constable 11. Iledly deposed, to finding the body in a paddock with a gun between the legs. Deceased had a shot wound in the abdomen, and death apparently was instantaneous. Deceased left a letter saying, "Good-bye to overybody in Waimiha." Tho coroner, in returning a verdict of suicide, said ' there was nothing to show; the state of deceased's mind,.
