ORAKEI DEVELOPMENT
NEED FOR RECREATION AREA APPEAL TO CITY COUNCIL Matters affecting the progress of tho Orakei suburb were discussed at a public meeting of residents held on Saturday afternoon. The meeting, which was convened by Messrs. N. It. Alexander and Andrew Murray, was called primarily to consider the provision of facilities in the suburb. It was unanimously resolved that immediate steps should be taken to secure the development of a playing area in the district, and a committee comprising Mrs. Ravenhall and Messrs. Jackson, Smith, Alexander, Lees and Murray was appointed to approach the City Council with a request that provision be made for this work in the estimates now under consideration. Failing a satisfactory reply from the council, it was resolved to take steps to form a local domain board. An inspection of two suggested sites for a recreation ground was made by the whole meeting, which gave tho committee full power to thoroughly investigate the schemes. Dissatisfaction was expressed with the condition of the road and footpath approaches to tho suburb and the dangerous nature of tho path and steps giving access from Tamaki Drive. It was agreed to request the City Council to give attention to these works. Tho meeting also decided to appeal to the Auckland Transport Board for the reinstatement of the bus service through the suburb, which was discontinued by the licence holder after a trial some three years ago. The provision of shelters at Ngapipi lioad and Okahu Street was also considered necessary.
The need for a public telephone was stressed and it was resolved to approach the Post and Telegraph Department in the matter. '
