THIRD SERIES OF MATCHES SOMERVILLE BEATS WESLEY NORTH SHORE AGAIN sSHORT Good ground conditions prevailed at Remuera on Saturday for the third series of matches in the first round of the Auckland Hockey Association's competitions, and high scores were registered in the three senior ganjes. Fast hockey was seen in tho principal match, that between Somerville and Wesley, and, although the former won by a margin of four goals, Wesley had a fair share of the attack. Although University scored only one goal in the first half of its match against Papatoetoe, it improved in the second spell, and finished by winning by six goals to nil. St. Luke's met with little opposition in North Shore, which played short for the third time this season. Following were the scores in the senior matches; — Somervillej 5; Wesley, 2. University, 6; Papatoetoe, 0. St. Luke's, 5; North Shore, 1.

WIN FOR SOMERVILLE WESLEY FIGHTS HARD , Bright, fast play prevailed in the game in which Somerville met Wesley, but the former had little difficulty in winning on account of superior tactics in the circle. As in previous games_ Wesley frequently took the ball to within striking distance, but failed to complete the movement through faulty stick-work. Somerville opened the attack and pressed round the Wesley goal-mouth, where Ireland kicked clear. Wesley retaliated with an attack' and this was beaten off, but soon afterwards Philpott, on the left wing, made a brilliant solo run down the line, tricked Parker, took the ball across and scored with a beautifully-placed shot to the centre of the goal. Somerville came back with a series of onslaughts on tho Wesley goal, but the <iefence held until E. Watts flicked the ball into the net. Wesley's chances looked bright when a forward rush culminated in Philpott sending in a nice reverse pass to Kiff, who was in a good position, but Parker intercepted. Following a scrummage in Jthe Wesley circle Glanville swung in to place Somerville in the lead. After a short period of keenly-contested play about the halfway mark Somerville advanced again for Wellbourne to push the ball into the goalmouth. From a roll-in near Somerville's t>venty-five the ball travelled across to Kiff, whose shot missed. Another run by tho Wesley forwards enabled Philpott to _ send in a stinging shot, which just missed, the ball hitting the side of the net. Play hovered in Somerville's territory until halftime came with the score: Somerville, 3; Wesley, 1. Both sides worked hard on resuming and the Somerville halves sent the Watts brothers away in" a nice run, but Stacey saved. Immediately E. Watts took the ball down jand Ireland ran out to meet him, but Watts shot with a clever reverse stroke which just missed. A few minutes later Wellbourne. took the ball into the circle, tripped and misdiit, but recovered and scored. This was followed by E. Watts making a solo run arid beating Ireland by lightly pushing the ball into the net. Somerville kept tip the pressure and looked like scoring again, but Ireland saved several times, and finally cleared. Wesley took a turn at attack and from a corner | Neate put the ball past Delahimty. Chapman had a line opportunity,, but played about with the ball instead- of shooting, j Toward- : the end. of the game Wesley | brightened up arid made several attacks. ! but could not 'finish them off. Somerville assumed the offensive, and stormed tho Wesley goal, but Ireland saved. The game ended with tho score:—Somerville, 5; Wesley, 2. , v.Messrs. E. J. Hewitt and R. Avery were -the umpires.

WIN FOR UNIVERSITY PAPATOETOE FAILS TO SCORE Papatoetoe gave its best exhibition this season in its match against University, lor, although beaten by six goals to nil. all members of the team showed marked improvement. In the first half the students experimented with a reorganised forward line, playing Floyd on the wing and Crawley in place of Jjawry. The arrangement, however, was not ultogether successful, and after the interval Floyd was brought in to inside left. • The University forwards attacked from the bully, but were stopped by Lusby. A further University attack gained it a penalty corner. which was not taken advantage of. and the position was relieved by a free hit. A good run by the Papatoetoe forwards enabled L. Smytheman to break away, but Brown rail out and kicked clear. Papatoetoe kept up the attack, however, and Brown was called upon to save two shots. Crawley cot the bull away and the students stormed the Papatoetoe goal. Airey making two fine saves, but at the third attempt Crawley scored. The score at the interval was: University. 1_: Papatoetoe 0. University mado the 'first advance, and, after a centre from Frascr went nstray, Don picked up and. netted. Play was kept in Papatoetoß territory for some time, the defending side making only one brief raid. A succession of penalty corners gave University a further chance, and Crawley scored from a melee in the circle. Crawley, Don and Frasfit went away in a passing rush, tho centre-forward shooting. Airey came out and stopped, but Frascr collected from the rebound and pushed the ball into the net. A further University run enabled A. Broun to score, and a few minutes later Floyd netted from the circle edge. The score at tho final whistle was: University. 6: Papatoetoe, 0. Messrs. C. Preston and A. BidwilJ were the umpires. ST. LUKE'S SUCCESSFUL WEAKENED OPPOSITION ' The weakened side fielded by North Shore ottered St. Luke's little opposition and tho latter was a hie to keep play in it 3 opponents -territory, the . North Shore attacks being in the nature of spasmodic efforts. A. feature* of tho game was the outstanding .work Of Jones, who was quite tireless throughout, especially during tho second hijlf, when he had an open goal behind ■ him. . St. Luke's} attacked from the commencement ' and within the first five minutes Grace centred for Torbet. ia score St. Luke'sr kept up the attack and Rankin was, called on to save several shots. From a corner Vipond' swung the ball into the corner of the net to increase the St. Luke's lead. Following a St. Luke's attack North Shore cleared and took the ball to the other end, where Hayson shot, but was ruled offside. St. Luke's gave the opposition little respite and a few minutes later Corin scored its third goal. North Shore had a short spell at attack, the forwards taking tho ball down to the circle, where Robertson cleared. 'North Shore rallied again, but the movement broke down and Wattam saved. St. Luke's had the better of the exchanges until half-time, when the score stood at:— St. Luke's, 8; North Shore, 0. Right at the commencement of the second half St. Luke's went away and" Torbet sent :in a stinging shot. Rankin ran out to meet it, but tho ball rose and struck

him over the left eye. He had to go off, leaving North Shore with only nine men. St. Luke's maintained its attack and looked like scoring several times, but hacd clearing shots from Jones, who was playing a sterling game at fullback, saved the position repeatedly. Eventually a penalty bully was awarded, from which Torbet sent the ball straight into the net. North Shore rallied and Hayson, following a centre from Carter, ran down between the Clark brothers, at fullback, to score North Shore's only goal. St. Luke's kept worrying the defence and juut before time Vipond scored an easy goal, making the final score:—St. Luke's 5: North Shore, 1. Messrs. A. Pluyle and A. Rivers were the umpires.
