May G Now South Wales retained the cightonr championship of Australia and won the King's Gold Cup in the annual race on the Denvent River yesterday, winning bv four lengths from Western Australia. Queensland was third and, 12 lengths away, Tasmania fourth. The Victorian and South Australian boats were swamped. The crews had to battle against a head wind, with the result that the time for the three miles was 19 minutes .'3B seconds, the slowest since 1884.

After the first mile New South Wales took the lead and though the Western Australians made a bold challenge over the last mile they could not catch the title-holders.

Herbert Turner had no trouble in retaiuing the Australian sculling title. He won by 20 lengths from 11. Beauchamp^ with C. Perlor, of Victoria, third.
