ARMED GANGSTERS

TERRORISM IN NEW YORK CHILDREN AMONG VICTIMS (Received May 6, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. May 5 Gangsters terrorised two sections of Manhattan's East Side to-day. In gun battles which ensued one policeman was killed and two gravely injured. Three children, including a 10-months-old baby, were also painfully injured. Four gunmen Mere making their escape from a store which they had robbed when they were questioned on suspicion by a policeman. Without warning all started shooting. They killed him instantly, then continued firing insanely, injuring the children. Two other policemen were shot at without warning when questioning suspicious characters in another section of the city.

So many officers have been victims of such attacks that the Mayor, Mr. Fiorello La Guardia, has issued an order to the police to " shoot first, and shoot to kill."
