HOUSING THE POOR

APPEAL BY THE PRINCE

LOWER RENTS URGED

ARCHITECTS' AID SOUGHT

By 1 elegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received May G, 5.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY. May 5 Speaking at the annual banquet to celebrate the opening of the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy, the Prince oi: Wales emphasised the opportunity which great housing schemes offered to architects. He said: " I refer to the rehousing of those workers who still, unfortunately, are living in lowly dwellings and under conditions they should not he.

" The rehousing of these people can bo achieved only by keeping rents down to one-fifth, or one-sixth, of their wages. This can bo very greatly helped by the co-operation of the architect and the building trade. "From some study of the whole question the solution appears to be in simplicity of exterior and interior design in order to provide the most up-to-date modern appliances embodying conveniences, cleanlinness and labour saving."
