WINTER SHOW SHIELD . SWORDFISH POSSIBILITIES [i'ROAI OUII OWN CORRESPONDENT] a." WHANG AREI, Saturday Discussion took piace at tho Whangarei Chamber of Commerce meeting last night on the question of,co-operat-ing \Vith the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoial Society in furthering the society's winter show, which commences on May 15. , On tho motion of the president, Mr. C. V. Stringer, it was decided to donate a shield for the window-dressing competition to be held in connection with the show. That a suitable base be established in the Whangarei Harbour from which oversea visitors and others could carry out deep-sea fishing excursions was the opinion expressed by members. Mr. R. H. Allan stated there was excellent deep-sea fishing to be obtained within a short distance of the entrance to the Whangarei Harbour. He referred to the various places at North Auckland where deep-sea fishing had become world known, but little or nothing had been done to make known the possibilities of the fishing grounds outside the Whangarei Harbour. Mr. .T. F. S. Briggs said there were undoubtedly largo numbers of swordfish and mako sharks of large dimensions to be obtained within a few miles of the entrance to tho harbour. On the motion of Mr. Allan, it was resolved to write to the Whangarei Cruising Club asking that body to send delegates to the next meeting of the chamber to confer with a view to forming a sword fishing club. Mr. H. Menzies moved, and it was carried, that a letter of thanks bo sent to the Postal Department for its action in arranging for a letter mail being sent by the train leaving Auckland shortly after 10 p.m. daily. The business. portion of the community was very appreciative of receiving three mails daily from Auckland.
