SEASON OPENING TO-NIGHT The 1934 wrestling season in Auckland will open, this evening, when Oki Shikrnu and Charles Santen, two recent arrivals from overseas, having been matched by the Auckland Wrestling Association, will meet »at the Town Hall. Neither of the visitors has competed in New Zealand previously. Both possess formidable records overseas and should be capable of producing some fine wrestling, especially as both will bo anxious to make an attractive first appearance before patronß of the sport in Auckland. Shikina is a Japanese of fine physique, weighing about 15 etone. He has met most of the outstanding wrestlers in the United States, including Londos, Lewis and Hay Steele, and feels very confident of beating any opponents he meets in New Zealand, either at the American or Japanese style of wrestling. His opponent this evening, Charles Santen, should prove a worthy foeman. For some months prior to coming to New Zealand, Santen-confined his activities to Europe and Spain, where ho built up a reputation as iv speedy and doughty exponent of the sport. Ho will bo conceding nothing in weight to Shikina. A first-class programme of amateur bouts will precede tho principal match.

Sunday Tho annual competition between members of the Whangarei Amateur Wrestling Gymnasium Club and tho Auckland Association Wrestling Club for the Rose Cup was held last night before a packed hall. The trophy was retained by Whangarei after some exciting wrestling. Following are the results:—K. Wilson (Auckland), Bst 12lb, heat J. Kissen (Whangarei), Bst 9lb, by two straight falls; F. Hollows (Whangarei), 9st 131b, beat W. Williamson (Auckland), 9st 10lb, on points after an extra round had been wrestled: B. Hollows (Whangarei). list, beat J. Simpson (Auckland), list 7lh, on points; R. Hollows (Whimgarei),' 12st 2lb, drew with R.' Douglas (Auckland), I2st 71b. A number of - preliminary bouts were held. Mr. J. P. Woods, of Whangarei, was referee.
