REPORTED SUNSPOT
NO GREAT SIGNIFICANCE DOMINION EXPERTS' OPINION [bv telegraph-—press association] WELLINGTON, Monday Experts at the Dominion observatory at Kelburn showed amusement, with a little indignation over its possible effect on the public, when the San Francisco cablegram, published to-day and announcing the appearance of a. "giant" sunspot, a precursor of "climatic upheavals, of a record nature," was referred to them.
The reply given was that the statements in the cablegram were mainly absurd and that,- whatever their authority was, it was hardly possible that they had originated from any of the responsible American astronomers.
The present sunspot was not extremely large. It had been estimated at the observatory to have the larj ;est diameter at the nucleus of 17,000 miles and a penumbra diameter of up to 28,000 miles. This was several times bigger than the earth, but was not particularly unusual for the sun.
Many sunspota very much larger had been found to have little or no effect on conditions on the earth.
