SILVER ADVOCATES

WASHINGTON AGITATION REMONETISATION SCHEME MR. ROOSEVELT'S ATTITUDE OFFER TO COMPROMISE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received April 22, 6.35 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 21 President lloosevelt to-day received a deputation of silver advocates in Congress". He stated flatly that he would not accept legislation to make the remonetisation of silver mandatory and reiterated that the problem must bo settled on some sort of international basis.

Mr. Roosevelt offered to compromise by agreeing to the bill providing for the acceptance of foreign silver for American farm exports if industrial products were included. Also he would accept " permissive " legislation for him to remonetise silver if he saw fit to do so.

There is some grumbling among the silver advocates, but there is little likelihood that they will be able to force radical legislation over the President's head at least during the present session.
