road races decided CONDITIONS HAMPER RIDERS The Manukati Amateur Cycling Club continued its winter road racing programme last Saturday under adverse conditions. A head wind slowed riders on one stretch of the triangular courso at Avondnlo South, while light rain alwo hindered competitors. In (he junior race of 7J miles, three laps, eleven started. C. T. Dwight and G. \V. Holland, the scratch pair, gave* away starts up to three minutes. Biding strongly and unpaced throughout, Hoffmann, off 3m, won easily by 85b from Tucker, with a close finish for third place. The placed juniors were:—H. A. Hoffmann (3m), 23m 4f>s, 1; E. E. F. Tucker (1m 30s), 22m Sis, 2; J. H. Gillbanks (lm). 22m 44b, 3: C. T. Dwight (scr), 21m 455, 4d. C. T. Dwight, per, who heat G. W. Holland, scr, by a wheel, gained fastest time. The 20 miles senior event, attiacted n field of 2ft starters, but, owing to the conditions, only half that number concluded the full eight laps. The limit riders, D. T. Riddell, R. .T. Vernon and W. W. S. Brown, received a. start of 7m 30s from the two scratch men, L. H. Dwight and J. Brown. At half way, 10 miles, Riddell had a lead of one minuto from his comarker, R. J. Vernon, and T. G. .Sullivan, 7m. .while the scratch rider, J. Brown, who had ridden away from his partner, Dwight, was 5m 47s in arrears, but was riding a great, race. Over the concluding ten miles Riddell, although unpaced, increased his leading margin. Meanwhile Brown cau?*it up well to com© up into second position on the final lap and to finish lm 46s after Riddell, who covered his last lap of two and a-half miles in 7m 325. Brown did his final round in 6m 455, and outsprinted Gallagher by two clear lengths for the placing.

The successful seniors were:—D. T. Riddell (7m 30s), 61m lis, J; .T. Brown (scr), fism 30s, 2; R. Gallagher (4m), S9m Sis, 3; T. L. Nixon (4m), 59m 325, 4. J. Brown, Bcr, gained fastest time. AUCKLAND AMATEUR CLUB There were good entries for the road races held on Saturday by the Auckland Amateur Athletio and Cycling Club. The junior event of eight miles resulted:—J. Fowler (2m 15s), 26m 51s, J; R. Cullen (2m 15s), 27m 225, 2: S. Windsor (1m 30s), 27m Bs. 3. Fowler gained fastest time. Twenty-four started in the senior event of 17 miles, which resulted:—M. Gamble (lm 30s), 51m 555, 1; Ij. Phillips (3m 455), 64m lis, 2; A. Keith (lm 30s), 51m 58s, 3; J. Price (4m 455), 55m 14s, 4. Gamble returned fastest time.

LYNNDALE AMATEUR CLUB The Lynndale Amatwr Athletic and Cycle Club conducted its second series of road races at New Lynn on Saturday afternoon under unpleasant riding conditions, a head wind prevailing over the greater part of the circuit, and considerably slowing up the times. Record fields wer© the order. Results:— Junior Race of 9 miles.—R. Hansen, 1; H. Davies and C. Bowles, dead-heat, 2; E. Carr, 3. Fastest time: Carr, 29m 455. 14 Miles Senior Event.—l>.
