HARRIER RACING

PAST SEASON'S ACTIVITIES t FINE RECORD OF SAVIDAN The chairman, Mr. G. G. Chambers, who presided at the annual meeting of tho harrier sub-committee of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre, reported a most successful season, with strong evidence that the sport has taken strong hold in tho province. Seven club* were actively participating, and an the four inter-club events conducted entries totalling between 120 and 150 hariiers were received. A team of six was selected to represent the province at the New Zealand championship at Wanganui, gaining third place. The individual race was won by J. W. Savidan. British Empire sis miles champion, this being the seventh time he has won this tjtle. On two occasions he did not defend it. being ahsent from New Zealand. Tho committee for the ensuing season was elected as fpllows-.—Chairman, Mr. G. G. Chambers, secretary and treasurer, Mr. L. .C. Barker; exccutiva committee, one delegate from each harrier club. The dates for the following races were fixed:—Opening run. May 12; three miles steeplechase handicap. .Tune 9: Auckland harriers teams' championship, July 21; Auckland provincial championship, August, 11: Onehunga-Auckland road race, conducted by the Technical Club, Juno 30.

CALLIOPE CLUB'S OUTING The Calliope Harrier .Chib had an increase in membership on Saturday over the record attendance of the previous week. Under Leaders A. E. Clayton and A. E. Davis a, fast and a slow pack took the field. A feature of the seven-miles run was the splendid form of the new men. Prior to the run a 75 yards handicap was held. Results wore as follows First heat: H. Turner, srr, I; R. Hculahan, Gjyds. 2; W. "Ward, 2Syds. S. Second heat: N. Shorter, liyds, 1: D. Smith, scr, 2; K. Drummond, 3|yds, 3. Third heat: H. Chappell, 4b'ds, 1; E. Bentlcy. syds, 2; A. E. Clayton, 11yds, 3. Final: H. Turner, 1: H. Chappell. 2; N. Shorter, 3. Won by a foot, with inches between second and third, and the rest of the field close up. A six-miles run at Birkenhead is announced for next Saturday, with a 100 yards sprint to count for points.
