TEST CRICKETERS
AUSTRALIAN TEAM BRIGHT BATTING IN PERTH MATCH WITH WESTERN STATE BROMLEY'S GOOD INNINGS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received March 25, 5.5 p.in.) PERTH, March 25 The Australian test cricketers began a match against Western Australia in Perth late on Friday. The local side batted first and opened disastrously, Alexander being bowled by Ebeling for nine. F. Bryant defied and punished all the bowlers except Grimmett, but had to retire owing to a strained groin after making a brilliant 70. When stumps were drawn four wickets were down for 226. Grimmett maintained his reputation, but tired early. Wall and Ebeling obviously were not bowling at their top speed. The Australians' fielding was not enterprising. When the game was resumed yesterday the Australians' bowling markedly improved, and they quickly dismissed Western Australia for 305. Taofe 79, 11. Bryant 45, Lovelock 42, and Francis 22, were the principal contributors. Grimmett took five wickets for 90, Ebeling three for 80, O'Reilly two for 60.
Woodfull and Ponsford opened Australia's first innings. The latter was brilliant and hit four fours in the first four overs. He was caught for 39, which included six fours. Woodfull was careful and correct. He was bowled by the local side's fastest bowler, Halcombe, for 4.5, including three fours. Darling was twice missed, and-suc-cumbed to the third chance for a useful 47. Bromley, a your.g Western Australian, was nervous facing his home audience, but soon settled down and quickly rattled up 59 with Kippax, who made 38. These two played out time, when the scoro was 237 for three wickets.
