AUSTRALIAN COMPETITORS TWO SURPRISE OMISSIONS (Received March 25. 5.5 p.m.) k SYDNEY, March 25 The Australian Olympic tejam has been chosen as follows: — Athletes. —J. P. Metcalfe (New South Wales), F. I. Woodhouse (Victoria), H. S. Yates (Victoria). • Boxer. —L. Cook (Queensland).
Cyclists.—E. L. Gray (New South Wales), H. Pethybridge (New South Wales).
Swimmers. —R. Clark (New South Wales), A. Higginson (Victoria),' N. Ryan (New South Wales), Miss Claire Dennis (New South Wales) , Miss Lesley Thompson (Victoria.). > Wrestler. —R. E. Gerrard (Victoria).
The manager is Mr. H. K. Maxwell. The team is regarded as a strong one, but some surprise is felt at the omission of George Golding and Miss Mealing.
Passages have been secured for the team on the Ormonde, leaving on May 2G.
EMPIRE GAMES PERSONNEL OF TEAM (Received March 25, 6.!!5 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 24 The Australian team for the Empire Games has been selected as follows: — Swimmers.—R. Clark (New South Wales), breaststroke and medley; Miss Claire Dennis (New South Wales), breaststroke; Noel Ryan (New South Wales), free-style; R. Higginson (Victoria) , breaststroke. Miss L. Thompson (New South Wales), springboard and high tower direr. Cyclists.—E. L. Gray - (New South Wales), 1000 metres trial; H. Pethybridge (New South Wales), distance. Wrestler. —R. E. Gerrard (Victoria), light-weight, Boxer.—L. Cifek (Queensland), lightweight. Other Athletes. —J. P. Metcalfe (New South Wales), high and broad jump; H. S. Yates (Victoria), sprinter; F. Woodhouse (Victoria), pole vault. It has been decided also to utilise the services of two Victorians at present residing in London, J. Horsfall for the 220 yds. and 400 yds. track events, and H. Lander, 800 yds. and mile track events. The decision of the selectors not to send a chaperone with the girl swimmers is adversely criticised. Miss Dennis says she could not have done so \\ ell at the last Olympic Games without the aid of the chaperone. Another critic asks: "Would the selectors care to send their own daughters on a similar trip unchaperoned."
