OBITUARY

MB. WILLIAM SHAW

EARLY WARKWORTH SETTLER [from our own correspondent! WARKWORTH, Tuesday The death has occurred of Mr. William Shaw, on<3 of the oldest and best known settlers of the Warkworth district. He was born on November 20, 1853, at Dumbarton, Scotland, and came to Now Zealand with his parents in tho ship Flying Foam in 1864. The family settled at Pohuehue, four miles from Warkworth, at one time known as Little Scotland on account of the group of Scottish families settled there. Mr. Shaw shared the hardships of the early pioneers in breaking in their land. In 1874 !ho irfarried Miss Marion Perry, a member of a neighbouring pioneer Scottish family. Mr. Shaw remained on the Same farm at Pohuehue until his death. He planted a nursery and. orchard and carried on - the business for many years, his sons eventually carrying on their father'!! extensive business. Mr. Shaw was an ardent Freemason and. always endoavoured to maintain the highest traditions of tho craft. He had been a member of the Rodney Lodge since he was a young man and in 1914 was master of Rodney Lodge. From 1920 until last month he held the office of almoner, and attended almost every meeting during that time. At tho funeral yesterday there was a large gathering of Freemasons. A brief Masonic service was conducted at the graveside. Mrs. Shaw died in 1923. Mr. Shaw is survived by six daughters and throe sons,.

MR. THOMAS PERCY The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Thomas Percy in his 74tli year. Mr. Percy was born in Antrim, Ireland, but spent- most of his boyhood days in Minnesota, Uniited States off America. He came to Auckland 54 years ago, and was farming at East Tamaki for some time. Ho afterward lived in Parnell, where he was in the building trade for many years. Always a keen yachtsman and a member of the old Devonport Yacht Club, he had the well-known yaciht Celox built in 1908. For the last 20 years Mr. Percy had lived at Wade Heads, a popular week-end resort for yachts and launches. Mr. Percy is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. G. H. Cornes, of Wellington, and Mrs. A. F. Furness, of Auckland, and three sons, Captain Wl R. Percy and Mr. A. Percy, of Auckland, and Mr. N. J. Percy, of Wade Heads. There are 12 grandchildren. The funeral will take place to-day.

MR. J. A. T. WILSON [from our own correspondent] T.EJ AWAMTJTU. Tuesday A resident of Kihikihi for over 40 years, Mr. John Alfred Thomas Wilson, died on Sunday at the age of 65 years. He was born at Parnell and learned the trade of coachbuilder at Otahuhu and Newmarket, coming to Kihikihi in 1893. For some years he worked in Clarke's smithy, which business he acquired in 1900. He served prominently on several public bodies, notably the Kihikihi School Committee and the Town Board. He leaves a widow and gfown-up family of five daughters and one son. MR. He was 69 years of age .and formerly lived ;in Nelson. REV. JAMES GUY [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CH RISTCHURCH, Tuesday The death occurred to-day of the Rev. James Guy, a retired minister nf the Methodist Church. He began his ministry in Dunedin in 1876, and had been stationed at Auckland, Wellington, New Plymouth, Christchurch, Ashburton, Waimate and Invercargill. 1 ————i \ MR. E. N. ANDREWS [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday The death is announced of Mr. Ernest Novello Andrews, aged 56, formerly well-known in New Zealand as a buyer for overseas wool brokers. He represented the French and Belgian firm of Kreglinger and Fernau here for 17 years. Mr. Andrews learned the business at Bradford and London.
