MAORI WOMAN'S OFFENCE
[from our own correspondent] "WHANGAREI, Tuesday In tho Police Court to-day, a married Maori woman, Rhoda Wahapu, was charged with forgery. Detective-Sergeant .Robertson said that accused had been employed at Ruatangata, at a wage of 10s a week. She took a. njimbcr of forms from a cheque book, and cashed two cheques to the value of £7 in the purchase of goods and change. "There seems to be something in accused's story that she has a child "and. aged mother dependent upon her, and had to steal to support them," said the detective sergeant, who added that there was nothing previously known against accused, and he was favourable to tho charge being reduced to one of false pretences. • The magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, agreed to the charge being-reduced, and he deferred sentence until March 19 to enable the probation officer to investigate the circumstances.
