BRITISH POST OFFICE
ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGE DISPOSAL OF REVENUE FIXED SUM TO EXCHEQUER SURPLUS FOR DEVELOPMENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received March 6, 7.5 p.m.) E'rilish Wireless RUGBY., March 3 Sir Ernest Bennett, Assistant Post-master-General, in a speech at Rugby, referred to the changes about to take place in the administrative machinery of the Post Office. He said that at the end of this month it would enter on a new stage of its financial development in accordance with the recommendations of the Bridgeman Committee. Hitherto the revenue earned , by the Post Office had been handed over to the Exchequer. In future a definite sum of £10,750,000 a, year would be contributed to the national revenue and any surplus would be retained by the Post Office and expended for the benefit of the public generally oil the development of services or a reduction of charges. Sir Ernest said the scheme was experimental, but it had every prospect of proving an outstanding success.
The Times in a recent article said: Sir Kingsley Wood, the _ PostmasterGeneral, during an official visit to Northern Ireland, spoke on the record surplus of over £11,000,000 made by his department. A fresh sign of efforts to turn the Post Office into a first-class business organisation is to be seen in two new appointments. Sir Evelyn Murray, the present administrative head, 'is promoted to the chairmanship of the Board of Customs, and as a Second Secretary retires next March, Sir Kingsley Wood has designated two young but experienced members of the staff for the vacant posts. The Post Office under the present PostmasterGeneral has manifested admirable zeal in commending its services to the public, in improving the character of those services, and in extending their scope.
