SILHOUETTE ARTIST

Tho silhouettes of Sir Philip ami Lady Game, which appeared in a Christchurch daily last week, have aroused much interest in that rare art of black profile portraiture. They were the work of Mrs. Doris Collins, wife of Mr. J. G. Collins, and she is said to be the only exhibitor of silhouettes in New Zealand. She has had an interesting career, both as a water-colour painter and as an exponent of that rare art, black profile portraiture. Studying under Maud Sherwood, of Wellington. Mrs. Collins won various prizes and medals for life work. After spending some time in England, where she was inspired by the revival of the silhouette, she returned to New Zealand with a desire to concentrate 011 that most simple form of portraiture. The simplicity and, at the same time, the subtlety of the art attracted her greatly, and the high standard of her work won instant recognition. Tho work that fascinates this artist most is that adding to old collections of silhouettes portraits of living members of a family, and site is constantly being asked to ut.dertake this task. Among Mrs. Collins' first sitters were members of Scott's expedition to the South Pole. Since then she has drawn vico-royaltv. prime ministers, archbishops, notable visitors, celebrities of the Dominion, and her latest distinguished sitters were the Governor of New South Wales and Lady Game.
