MOUNT EDEN CLUB CARNIVAL

JOHNSON'S RECORD BREAKING

GOOD TIMES BY MISS RAINEY

The first appearance of the Auckland representative swimmers after their return from the New Zealand championships now in progress at Christchurch will be made at the Mount Eden Club s carnival in the Mount Eden Baths next Tuesday evening, when a \ciy attractive programme will be presented. After the national championships action will no doubt be taken in regard to New Zealand's representation in swimming events at the British Empne Gaines in London next August. Nominations will have to be made in good time and, once the final selection is announced, centres and clubs represented in the team will have to set about collecting their share of expenses. A record-breaking swim which attracted comment was that of V* . •Johnson at the Waitemata Amateur .Swimming Club's carnival last week, in a special attack on the half-mile record for intermediate boys, established in I'JL'O by N. S. Batchelor, of Canterbury, he reduced it by ]m 11 l-ss, registering 11m 1-1 4-Gs. 1 hat Johnson s feat was a splendid achievement is emphasised by the fact that G. Bridson's senior record is 11m 0 4-ss. Now that N. Crump has forfeited intermediate status by competing in senior national championships, Johnson should be more in prominence, particularly as it is his resolve to set fresh records before leaving the division at the end oi the season. The New Zealand intermediate girl champion. Miss Edna Rainey, did her best sprinting in the 100 yards ladies' handicap. She won the second heat in 6(5 3-5s and in the final dead-heated with a limit girl, Miss M. Black, in 66 2-ss. The time was 3-os faster than she registered ill the Auckland intermediate championship, 1 --5s slower than Miss Barbara Lewin s time in winning the Auckland senior championship and only 1 slower than Miss Marie Farquliar's record for New Zealand. The fact that Miss Rainey made faster time in the final than in the heat suggests that if she had been extended. she could have done better in the heat. She is 16 years of yet

these times are, next to Miss Lewin's, the fastest put up in Auckland by a swimmer of her sex this season.

Another excellent performance was that of ;:he New Zealand junior champion, A. Paseoe, in the 440 yards open handicap. The runner-up to R. Thomas, he was timed by private watches at sui 44 3-ss. This was three seconds better than the New Zealand junior record established in the Tepid Baths in January. 1927, by the Otago swimmer, Leslie U'lds.
