DAVIS CUP CONTEST
DOMINION TEAM'S PROSPECTS
]• roin a New Zealand point of view considerably more interest will be added to this years Davis Cup contest bv the participation ol E. I). Andrews, C. E. Malfrov and A. C. Stedman in what may be regarded as the Dominion's iirst serious (,'li'ort in international competition. Jt is certainlv the strongest team that could be selected and all the players have had the advantage of overseas experience.
New Zealand firist entered as a separate nation in 192J, when F. M. B. I'isbcr and .7. C. Peacock were defeated by th" Czeeho-Slovakian representatives by four to love. At that time, however, neither Fisher nor Peacock was at his best. Ihe two were not the strongest players that could have been selected, but they were available in England and so were made use of. In 11)25 the Dominion team was entered in the American zone, but defaulted to Canada. E. D. Andrews and P. R. T. Young defeated Portugal at Lisbon by four matches to one in 1928, but defaulted in the next round. This year's draw teems favourable and the Dominion's team has an opportunity of going some distance before running into serious opposition.
