BURNED TO DEATH
TENEMENT DWELLERS TRAGIC NEW YORK FIRE (Received February jB, 6.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 17 Five children and three adults were burned to death in a fire in a five-storey tenement house in a congested New York slum early this morning. It was one of the most disastrous fires of the kind the city has experienced for many years. The victims consisted of two entire families. They were trapped in the building and the firemen could not reach them. It has been noted that the tenement was 50 years old and that the owners had committed a breach of the fireescape provisions of the housing la\\s. Officials have promised to hold an investigation and to enforce the provisions of the Act in order to present similar tragedies in future.
