SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT

MOTOR-CAR ON FOOTPATH LORRY DRIVER FINED [FROM OT7R OWN CORRESPONDENT^ MOMINSVILLE, Saturday On November 19, a motor-car driven by Miss Elsie Smith, of Waitoa, in swerving to avoid a motor-lorrv laden with cream, was driven on to the footpath, knocking down and injuring a pedestrian. A sequel to the accident was heard in the Magistrate's Court at Morrinsville yesterday, when Henry Arthur Bowers, cream-carrier, of Morrinsville, was charged with failing to give way to another motor vehicle approaching from the right when nearing an intersection. Miss Smith was charged with driving a motor-car in a manner dangerous to the public. Tho evidence of by-standers and of the injured man was to tho effect that, as tho car driven by Miss Smith approached the intersection, the lorry driven by Bowers turned to the right into the main street from Studholme Street. Miss Smith was learning to drive at the time, and was accompanied in the front seat by her father, who had a driver's licence. Tho magistrate, Mr. F. W. Platts, said the primary cause of tho accident was the failure of Bowers, whose lorry caused an obstruction while turning, to pull up and allow the approaching car to pass. Bowers was fined £2 and costs £1 17s. Miss Smith, said the magistrate, had been forced to swing to tho left in order to avoid a collision. Through inexperience she then lost" control of the car.
