HARD-FOUGHT MATCHES ENGLISHMEN WIN DOUBLES (Received February 3, 12.5 a.m.) • ADELAIDE. Feb. S In a tennis tournament in Adelaide to-day the matches, resulted as follows: — Singles.—Wilde beat Turnbull, 6 —3, 6—-1; Hopman beat Hughes, 11—9, 6 —2; Quist beat Lee, 9 —7, 6 —2Doubles. —Perry and Hughes beat Crawford and Hopman, 16—14, 3—6, 4—6, 7 —5, 6—3., Wilde gave his best display in Australia and routed Turnbull in 49 minutes. The Hopman-Hughes match was spectacular. Hopman seldom erred and he dominated the play toward the end. Quist and Lee were responsible for some brilliant exchanges. In the doubles Hopman's play was outstanding. It was ths most thrilling doubles of the present series. DAVIS CUP CONTEST JAPANESE ABSENTEES LONDON. Feb. I Tennis enthusiasts are very sorry to hear the news from Tokio that neither Nunoi nor Satoh will be available for the Davis Cup-contest this year.
