AGED SOLDIER'S DEATH
SIR lAN HAMILTON'S TRIBUTE General Sir lan Hamilton has lost a " dear old comrade " by the death at Preston, Lancashire, of Janies Campbell, aged 76, who was with Sir lan. at the taking of Kabul during tha Afghan War of 1878-80. The Afghan War was the first of Sir lan Hamilton's varied experiences of active service. He had been in the army only five years when the campaign began. He said recently: " Campbell was a private in my old regiment, tha Gordons, during'the Afghan campaign. He was a good fellow and "an excellent soldier. " The year following the close of the' Afghan campaign I was at ,the battle of Majuba Hill and was with me there. I think there are now only three survivors of Majuba. Many of my old comrades correspond with me, and Campbell was one of them. He was a dear old boy and I am deeply sorry to lose such a verv old comrade."
