345-YEAR-OLD CHARITY
Ashton-in-Makerfiold has a Christmas charity of which it is justly proud. It is known as the Linen and Woollen Stock Charity. It is thought that the original gift was a thank-offering for the defeat of the Spanish Armada, for the charity dates from 15S8. The original benefaction was not much, but it was invested in land in the near neighbourhood which to-day is in the centre of the Wigan coalfield, so that now the money—interest on the original capital—which is available each Christmas for buying poof people needful garments amounts to £2OO.
