BIRKENHEAD WATER

SERVICE FROM CITY PROGRESS OF THE WORK SUPPLY EXPECTED NEXT MONTH The work incidental to giving Birkenhead a supply of water from the Waitakeres is being prosecuted with all possible expedition. The laying of tho pipe-line in the Western Springs area has been proceeded with steadily and another five chains will bring this extension to the harbour edge practically completing the work of pipe-laying on tho city side of the harbour. A start is to be made on Monday at the Birkenhead end with a staff of men, four of whom have been engaged locally. This work will bo tho connecting with the Birkenhead 9in. rising main, at tho corner of Balmain Road and Waipa Street, of the 6in. main to be laid from this point to Shark Bay, which it is estimated will take until the end of February. No work so far has been dono on the reef extending from Point Chevalier toward Kauri Point. The under-harbour section cannot be laid until the arrival from England of the special 6in. pipes. Delivery is expected at Auckland about the end of February, and a fortnight will be occupied in laying these pipes on the harbour bed in the deepest water along the route of the pipe-line. Present indications are that tho whole work will be completed and the water turned on at the Birkenhead reservoir about the middle of March.
