SWIMMING CHAMPIONS

RETURN OF AUCKLANDERS SUCCESS IN SEVEN EVENTS ■ The Auckland intermediate and junior swimming representatives who took par.t in the New Zealand championships at Palmerston Nox-th last week-end, and retained the War Memorial Shield, returned home yesterday morning. They were met by members of the Auckland Swimming Centre and other enthusiasts and warmly congratulated upon their success. Members of the team won altogether seven championships. N. Crump won the 100 yds., 220 yds. and 440 yds. titles for .intermediate boys, Miss E." Rainev the 100 yds. for intermediate girls, D. Shanahan the 100 yds. breaststroke for intermediate boys', A. Pascoe : the 220 yds. for junior boy's and M. Shanahan the 75yds. brea'ststroke fof juuior bovs. Three of the other five representatives were placed in the contests in ivhich they competed. The manager, Mr. F. C. Walker, said the team had created a highly favourAble .impression in Palmerston North because of its skill. The actions of the Aucklanders and the training methods they iised had been studied with much interest by southern coaches and enthusiasts. Mr. Walker said that, in spite of the uncommonly slow freshwater conditions, titles were won- in the fastest times registered at a Dominion intermediate and junior meeting.' Accomplished young swimmers such as Crump, Pascoe, M. .Shanahan and Miss Raincy, of Auckland; S. Jarvis, of Dunediu; Miss D. Symon, of Invercargill; and Miss R. Low, of Christchurch; may eventually bring to New Zealand .international championships. The only unpleasant incident was the disqualification of the Aucklander, A. Pascoe,. in the 100 yds. junior boys' championship, because he allegedly did not touch the top of the bath. A protest by Mr. Walker, on the grounds that Pascoe, who was first by syds., had time to place- his hands on the top of the bath and speak to Mr. Walker before the second competitor had finished, was not accepted. Several officials,- however, agreed that-there was no doubt Pascoe should have been awarded the championship.
