ULTRA-MODERN ART
TENDENCY IN FRANCE NON-COMMITTAL PAINTER [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] "WELLINGTON, "Wednesday Mr. Sydney L. Thompson, the noted New Zealand artist, accompanied by his wife and two daughters, arrived by the Wanganella, en route to Christchurch, where he and his family will make their home.
In an interview, Mr. Thompson said that Paris was the world's market for paintings. France was one of the most beautiful countries in the world for the painter. He had been accustomed to paint fishing scenes in Brittany during the summer and landscapes and portraits on the Riviera in the winter. Asked whether ultra-modern art was on the wane in France, Mr. Thompson's reply was: "It is and it isn't." It appeared to be on the wane at the larger exhibitions, he said, but there were still plenty of exhibitions of ultramodern art.
