THE FLOWER GARDEN Sow Iceland poppies, cineraria and primula. Plant out zinnias for later bloom. Sow hardy annuals in vacant places for Autumn bloom. Stake and tie tall-growing border plants. Michaelmas daisies look much better if no more than four to six stems are allowed to each plant. Put in cuttings of hydrangeas, pansies and pinks. Layer carnations in prepared beds. Bud roses as required. Cuttings of pelargonium may be planted when the wood has ripened. Chrysanthemums should be well mulched to retain sufficient moisture. Dahlias should be kept well disbudded if choice ■ blooms are desired. Bulbs which have completed growth can be taken up. Onions showing signs of ripening should have tops bent over. Keep up supplies of lettuce by sowing every fortnight. Marrows, pumpkins, cucumbers and celery need plenty of water. Rhubarb should not be allowed to seed. Remove flower spikes as soon as they appear. Thin-out young growths of raspberry and loganberry. Four to six shoots are enough to leave for next season's crop. Give fruit trees summer pruning as required. Budding of fruit trees may commence this month. Look over trees grafted last spring; many will need attention. Make up outdoor mushroom beds in a sheltered place. Keep side shoots picked from tomatoes. If caterpillar is present, »pray with arsenate of lead.
