STARTLING EXPLOSION

CIGARETTE THROWN ON SACK MAN SEVERELY BURNED [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE KUITI, Saturday A startling experience, as the result of which he received severe burns about the arms, befel Mr. Stuart Duthie yesterday. The accident occurred at the home of Mr. Duthie's parents at Te Kumi. Mr. Duthie, after smoking a cigarette, threw the butt on to a sack lying by the back door. On his grinding the lighted butt into the sack in an endeavour to extinguish it there was a sudden llaro and explosion and Mr. Duthie was burned by the flames. Medical assistance was at once obtained and Mr. Duthie was removed to the Te Kuiti Hospital for treatment. It is surmised that the sack had be come impregnated with sodium chlorato iu some way.
