OPENING RACES OF SEASON FOUR CLUBS HOLD TRIALS Summer conditions and the virtual opening of the rowing season in Auckland caused quite a crowd of rowing enthusiasts to visit the waterfront road course, where tho St. George's and Waitemata Clubs were deciding trial fours on Saturday afternoon. Lively water conditions prevailed, especially when the finals were being rowed,, and some spirited and exciting tinishes were witnessed. H Biss, stroked the successful crow, prevailing in tho final by two lengths. The crews in tiie first heat wero:—J. R. H Hiss, P. Pike, St. Clair Brown, C. Hurt; A. J. Sly field. S. Hislop. W. L. Can T. Kirk; C. D'Authreau. D. Woollarns, 11. Tong, B. Atkins. After a good contest. Bisk won by a length froift Slyfield, with D'Authreau third.

Ellerbeck's trophies, wore held over the waterfront road course. The fir.nl resulted in all easy win for E. Ware's crew. The en ws in the first hi nt were:—C Thompson, K. Staples, P. Shirley, F,. H. Seuley; J. W. Swift, C. Ross. P. Hayes. S. W. Cook; L. K'oss, J. Lawrence, Chappell. A. Stewart. It was fairly even going to the bend, where Thompson shot to the front and, withstanding Swift's challenge, won by a length. In tho second bent tho crews, were:—R. B. Smith. E. 11. Bishop, F. Home, Hough; J. (). Hanlon, C. A. Francis, j\. Smith, Coiuthlan; K. Ware. J. Reimer, M. Pierce, 'idmlinson. This wae a good race in tho initial stages until Ware took tho lend. However. opposite tho Parnell Baths Smith made a spirited challenge. but Ware's crew was prepared nnd crossed the line with two lengths to spare. Tho rival strokes in the final were Thompson and Ware. The last-named took the lead early and, rowing well, scored a very easy victory. AUCKLAND CLUB PACKS EOT? HENDERSON (TP The Auckland Rowing Club decided its trials, which were for tho Henderson Cup and trophies, donated by the club, over a course from the King's Wharf to the eastern tide deflector. Good racing was witnessed, while tho final provided an exciting contest throughout. Mr. M. <>. Stewart noted as judge, while tho starting was by mutual consent. In the initial heat T. Morton. R. I'orter, E. Johns and Jellio met R. Wilson. C. Chamberlain, W. u\. Bavestock and T. Lowe, and won by a length. The second heat boats wcr.e manned by L. K. Hughes, F. Hcald, D. Mnlvihill. C. O. Hughes; D. Robinson. A. Or. Fisher. R. Leabourno and W. Cormack. Hughes' crow won by over a length. (Exciting throughout, the final provided a thrilling finish. Morton was tho first away and commanded a slight lead to about half-wav, where Hughes drew level. Passing tho vehicular ferry wharf tho trews were level. Both clapped on the pace, and in a thrilling finish Hughes slipprcl ahead to gain the verdict by a. length. WEST END CLUB SEASON'S SECOND TRIALS The West End Club, which commenced its season a fortnight ago, held its second set of trials on Saturday. The Kobn Shield and trophies were rowed for, and five crews competed. Tho course was from tho oil tanks to the Shelly Beach Baths. The water conditions were somewhat lively, and some great racing was indulged in. Mr. D. (>• Stotter was judge, tho starting being by mutual consent. The first heat crews -were:—M. H. D. Conway, N. W. Jerrome, J. 11. Barton, R. Notion, E. Worthington (cox.); C. J. Wright, 11. Newcombe, T. Brydon. E. Macpherson, D. Stewart (cox.). Until half-way it was even racing. Here, however, Wright gained a slight advantage, but in the final 100yd3 or so Conway'« crew drey; level, and in "a great finish gained tho advantage by three-quarters of a length. Tho second heat crews were:—J. H. Donovan, F. Conway, W. Parnell, A. Macpherson, F. Jennings (cox.); F. G. Bowling, A. D. Dalton, L. R. McDonald, L. Fearoti, RSchofield (cox.) ; L. Lambie, E. Such, J. H. Davey, R. Aro, V. Robinson (cox.). Following an excellent start, Bowling went into the lead. Tho other crews drew level, and at half-way Lambio's crew, swinging well, went steadily to tho front. Both Bowling and Donovan issued challenges, but Lambie's crew, rowing easily, went on to win with a length and a-half to spare from Bowling, who was half a length in front of Donovan. In a great final, with both crews racing neck and neck throughout, Conway prevailed by a bare half-length in a great finishing effort.
