SHOPLIFTERS CAUGHT

TWO WOMEN CONVICTED EACH FINED FIVE POUNDS Charges of theft from a shop in Karangahape Road on Friday were admitted by two married women who appeared in the Police Court on Saturday before Mr. F. K. Hunt, fi.M. Emma Marris, aped tiO (Mr. Dugpan), admitted stealing a piece of elastic and a jabot, of a total value of 2s 6id. Detective-Sergeant O'Sullivan said accused was seen by a shopwalker to fake the elastic and place it in her bag. "When sho was searched the jabot was also found. Mr. Duggan said accused and her husband had been in New Zealand for over 20 years and both had unblemished records. Accused was in comfortable circumstances and had no need to steal. She had over £2 10s in her possession at the time, but had given way to sudden temptation. Accused was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment. The magistrate refused to suppress her name. Jn the sec )iid case Bronwen Jones, aged .">0 (Mr. Moody)., was charged with stealing a bathing suit, valued at LI 4s 6d. Mr. Moody said accused had never been in trouble before.
