THE GRIZZLY BEAR
ATTACKS ON PROSPECTORS MISSING MEN INCREASING [from our own correspondent] VANCOUVER, Sept. 13 An increasing number of men reported missing in the Yukon is due to encounters with grizzly bears, in the opinion of officers of the North-West Mounted Police, who have investigated. Recently two attacks by bears came to notice. In one case, a prospector was partly devoured. In the other, a "Mountie," who accompanied a prospector, saved his life, but not until the bear, taking them unaware, had seized the miner and bore him to the ground, breaking his leg, before the officer could fire. The police have issued a warning that the bears in the extreme North are apparently changing their peaceful habits and attacking humans without provocation.
