INTOXICATED DRIVERS
TERMS OF IMPRISONMENT SENTENCES ON TWO MEN OFFENCES IN CHRISTCHURCH [by TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH. Monday Terms of imprisonment with hard labour were imposed by Mr. E. 1). Mosloy, S.M., upon two men charged with being intoxicated while driving motor vehicles. Nicholas Welsh, aged 42, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. Ho was driving a truck at six o'clock on Saturday when it ran into the rear of a motor-cycle that was being wheeled along tho side of the road. The owner of the motor-cycle was injured, and had to receive medical attention.
Walter Gilbert Butler, aged 2G, was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment. It was stated that he had a list of four previous convictions for motorinir offences, and on one occasion had been fined £25 for being drunk. To-day he was prohibited from obtaining another liconco for three years. A police officer said: "I feel it my duty to point out that there have been four similar cases within a week. Tho Court may have to consider whether the penalties imposed in the past have been sufficient to act as deterrents." The Magistrate: They haven't been, evidently. LABOURER BEFORE COURT PENALTY OF £7 IMPOSED [from our own correspondent] TE AROHA, Monday In tho Te Aroha Police Court this morning, before justices, Herbert C. E. Smith, labourer, of Shaftesbury, pleaded guilty to being, intoxicated while in charge of a car on Saturday night, and also in driving without a licence. Accused pleaded for leniency and offered to take out a prohibition order.
Accused was fined £7 and ordered to pay costs.
Suppression of accused's name was refused
