BOWLING AND CROQUET
WAITEMATA SEASON OPENS The summer season was ushered in on the North Shore on Saturday afternoon with tho official opening of tho Waitemata Club's bowling and croquet greens at Northeote. Full advantage was taken of the inviting fine weather to spend tho afternoon out of doors in tho congenial environment of well-kept grounds, grassy lawns and a happy company. Several selections woro played by the Birkenhead Borough Band. The president, Mr. F. G. Blackwell, paid a tribute to tho assistance given by the ladies throughout tho year, and particularly on the occasion of the annual ball. Brief addresses were given by Mr. A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, Mr. H. G. 11. Mason, M.P. for Auckland Suburbs, and Mr. J. W. White, representing tho Auckland Bowling Association, all offering congratulations on the successful, inauguration of tho season. Mrs. Blackwell assisted her husband and 6cnt tjie first jack up the green to a long head. Tho croquet lawns adjacent were also opened for the season, the president, Mrs. E. G. Bailey, driving the first ball through the hoops. The function was thoroughly enjoyed by both players and spectators, the latter including the Rev. Father J. T. Taylor.
