SUPPLY OF WATER

NORTH SHORE BOROUGHS SERVICE FROM THE CITY NEGOTIATIONS WITH COUNCIL BIRKENHEAD AND NORTHCOTE Decisions of the Birkenhead and Northcoto Borough Councils to proceed with arrangements to secure water supplies from the city source were convoyed to the Auckland City Council last evening in a communication from the town clerk of Birkenhead. With the letter was submitted an extract from tho minutes of a meeting of tho Birkenhead Borough Council, held on Wednesday, with regard to the recent negotiations between tho Mayors of Northcoto and Birkenhead, the Mayor of Auckland, and the City Council Public Services Committee, and also a copy of a resolution passed by tho Northcoto Borough Council at its meeting last Tuesday. Tho minute stated: —"Considerable discussion took place on a report by the Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, regarding negotiations which he and the Mayor of Northcoto, Mr. R. Martin, had jointly made with tho Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, and the City Council Public Services Committee. It was resolved to approve tho principle of obtaining a supply of water from tho Auckland City Council in terms of the report, and that Mr. Mills bo authorised to take steps to finalise matters in conjunction with the Northcote Borough Council and also the other two North Shore borough councils, if possible." The resolution passed by the Northcote Borough Council was as follows: — "This council authorises the Mayor to complete arrangements jointly with Birkenhead borough in its negotiations with the Auckland City Council for the supply of water to both boroughs, and to make tho best terms possible for such supply." The City Council decided to refer the matter to the Public Services Committee, with power to complete an agreement for submission to the council for decision. ATTITUDE 0? TAKAPUNA CITY NEGOTIATIONS URGED In a resolution passed at the last meeting of tho Takapuna Borough Council, it was decided to advise the North Shore Water Board that the council was of the opinion that the Lake Pupuke water supply should be abandoned as soon as possible. Tho resolution further stated the time was opportune for tho water board to open negotiations with the Auckland City Council to arrange for a future water supply from the Waitakeres on the best possible terms. The Takapuna council was definitely opposed to any augmentation of the Lake Pupuke supply froip the Upper Wairau scheme.
