Sept. 14 The Commonwealth Bank's returns show that the past half-year's profits totalled £861,083, compared with £1,426,734 for the first half of last year, a decrease of £565,651. Savings Btfnk depositors' balances show an increase of £1,667,729, and now stand at £117,943,481. WESTLAND BREWERIES MONTEITH'S 6 PER CENT The annual report of Westland Breweries, Limited, shows a net profit of £1024, compared with £7Ol in the previous year. No dividend is recommended. None has been paid in the past two years. After providing for income tajc, the balance to credit of profit and loss appropriation account is £2592. / The report refers to depressed conditions in the trade and states that "the only chance this class of business has of eventually prospering is that possibly effect may be given to representations now being made to Parliament for the amelioration of conditions in this very important and re-venue-producing trade." The directors of Monteith's Phooniy Brewery, Limited, report that the company's functions are those of a holding company, all its interests having been merged in Westland Breweries, Limited. The interest "on the debentures in Westland Breweries is always regularly paid, but now at the reduced rato of 8 per cent. Payment of a dividend of 6 per cent, the same as in tho previous year, is recommended. HUME PIPE COMPANY IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED Results of operations of the Hume Pipe Company (Australia), Limited, for the year -ended June 30 were announced in the Herald on September 6. In the report now furnished the directors state it is anticipated that the business of the company in Australia will be maintained at the present improved level, and some improvement may be expected shortly in New Zealand. During the year factories were established at Blenheim, in New Zealand, and Harden (N.S.W)., and the Sydney plant was considerably extended. Hume Steel, Limited, handled a larger volume of business, and consequently was able to hand over a greater volume of orders to the Hume Pipe Company for the concrete lining of steel pipeß. The business of the Singapore Hume Pipe Company, Limited, which has been extended to Hongkong and Shanghai, is expected, to develop satisfactorily at those centres.
