AUSTRALIA'S DEFENCE
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS WARNINGS OF DANGER SYDNEY. Sept. 13 Australia's defence necessities have loomed large of late in the public eye. Mr. W- M. Hughes is prominent, and is speaking of organising a Citizens' Defence League to arouse the people to a proper appreciation of their danger in the event of international trouble developing. The military authorities favour a voluntary scheme, as opposed to compulsory country units. The compulsory system was dropped by the Scullin Government in 1929, but.a scheme is now being promoted on a voluntary basis, and men are enlisting readily and preparing for terms .of training with the existing city forces.
