RUGBY FOOTBALL

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS MATCH AGAINST WELLINGTON CHAMPION TEAMS MAY MEET A prominent mile-stone in the history of Rugby football in Auckland will be reached this coming week-end, when the jubilee of the Auckland Rugby Unipn will be celebrated in a manner in keeping with the importance of the occasion. The matter has been receiving the earnest attention of the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Union for some months now, and, at last evening's meeting, the chairman, Mr. H. Frost, reported everything in readiness for a fitting recognition of the fine progress of the union during its 50 years of existence.

A few outstanding details were finalised, the chairman, in a closing address to the committee, expressing the hope that the fullest co-operation of all supporters and players of Rugby football would be forthcoming to make the occasion a memorable one in the annals of the game in Auckland. It was resolved to assemble both the Wellington and Auckland teams near Eden Park on Saturday, where they would be picked up and conveyed into the ground in drags, in a manner typical of old times. The time for the commencement of the AucklandWellington match was fixed at 3 p.m. While accepting September 23 as the date for its match with Auckland, the Kaipara Sub-union stressed the need for Auckland sending the best team available. It was decided to advise Kaipara that three Auckland representative teams would be engaged on that date, but the Auckland Union would be able to send a strong team North. Mr. M. Kronfeld "was appointed manager of the Auckland team to play South Auckland at Hamilton on Saturday week. Arising out of negotiations by the Auckland Union, the Wellington Union advised through the parent b!}dy that the Wellington College Old Boys' team, winner of the Wellington championship, was willing to play the winners of the Auckland senior championship at Auckland on October 7. Consideration of the matter was deferred for one week. The New Zealand Union notified the reinstatement of P. Donovan and A. J. Johnstone. ' • TARANAKI BEATS OTAGO MARGIN OF ONLY ONE POINT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Wednesday The Taranaki touring Rugby team defeated Otago to-day at Carisbrook by 15 points to 14. The game was even throughout, j Otago's defeat was due to the failure of the inside backs to break through. The forwards were well matched, though the visitors, notably S. Fookes and Wetere. were quicker to break from the scrums, and Simon, the Otago halfback, was bustled all day. The Taranaki backs did nothing in the way of combined attack, though their defence was very solid, and for the most part they were content to play off Otago's mistakes. Collins, the Taranaki fullback, was sound on defence, as also was Otago's fullback, Taylor. The latter was in good goalkicking form, and, in spite of the fact that the ball was heavy owing to the wet ground and a shower in the first spell, he kicked two penalty goals, one from just inside halfway, and converted a try. Otago had slightly the better of the game in the first spell and at half-time was leading by 8 points to 6. Otago's score at this stage was comprised of a penalty goal by Taylor- and a try by R. McSkimmmg. which Taylor converted. For Taranaki, Ruther; ford crossed at the corner after making a dash from a scrum, which took the Otago defence by surprise, and Ross kicked a penalty goal. ■ In the second spell _ the scores kept close together and Taranaki's final lead was due to Ross* fine goal-kicking, which turned a deficit of five points into a one-point lead. Early in the spell Allen,/the Otago wingthreequarter, kicked past Collins and chased the ball over the line to score an unconverted try. Taranaki scored as a result of a forward rush, in which Fowler beat Tay» lor in a race for the ball. The Otago fullback once again gave the home side a lead of five points by _ placing a penalty goal, but two scrum infringements by Otago forwards in the final 20 minutes enabled Ross to kick goals, giving Taranaki victory by a point, the score being 'ls-14 in the visitors' favour.
