WATER CHARGES
Sir, —Is it not high time that we at least have free water, when we are all so very hard-up? I live in Devonport. where 1 own some property, and I speak as a ratepayer. We aro all in the same boat with regard to diminished incomes, and it would surprise you to know that water is being used so sparingly in a good many homes by the careful housewife that it becomes a real danger to the community. Why not go back to the old system of a flat rate, or special rate on the ratable value of the property? The water we use should be free; Itet us cut out other things; but we must have plenty of good water. I quite realise the difficulties the North Shore subarbs are working under, with regard to tho lake. But why not make an efFort to get a permanent, plentiful supply? I hope other ratepayers will take up this urgent matter. At present water is costing me nearly £4 a year for four people. This is too much, and we are very careful not to waste any. Cleanliness,
