CATS, OR HUMAN SOULS?
Sir, —I read with astonishment the letter in Saturday's Hebald, "Cats or Human Souls?" It is our duty to care for all animals as well as children, and from my own observation I have always found that the man or woman who loves and will succour an animal is the first to stretch out a helping hand to a human being. The little that the cats and dogs are getting would neither help nor hinder in straightening out matters a3 they are in New Zealand at the present time, and other organisations are quite free to get up dances, bridge parties, etc., for funds too (and they do). How many sick people and children in the city at this moment are dependent for their very lives on the service of that patient mother of the human, race —the cow. And look at the excellent work the S.P.C.A. is doing at this present time for more humane handling and treatment of the poor little bobby calves. The animals spend their patient lives serving us and they are so defenceless, so utterly dependent on any little thing we do for them. K.M.
