BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
POSTAL FACILITIES
The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, presided. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. A. Hamilton, wrote that the time had not arrived when a branch post office should be established at Highbury. It was decided to wait upon the Minister on his next visit to Auckland to urge the erection of a post office in the centre of the borough. The chief postmaster at Auckland, Mr. S. M. Harrison, wrote that the department was unable to give favourable consideration to the requests for an improvement in the postal delivery at Birkenhead.
"There is one thing we are sure of—the water is no good," said Mr. A. Hadfield, when the analysis of the water in Lake Pupuke was received from the North Shore Water Board, couched in technical terms.
Support was given to a remit forwarded by the Invercargill Borough Council, urging legislation to provide for a larger contribution by the insurance companies toward the finances of |ire boards, instead of equal levies by local bodies and insurance companies, after deducting the small Government contribution.
