AMATEUR ATHLETICS

TECHNICAL'S FIELD DAY CHAMPION WINS AGAIN UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIP Tho harrier season was closed for the Technical OKI Boys Club at Mission Bay oil Saturday when tho usual events of a field day were decided. There was a largo muster of athletes and friends and soino fine running resulted. W. S. Bhinbridgo accounted for tho 100 yards and tho 440 yards in good stylo and showed that tho long-distance work has not deprived him of any of his speed. B. Adams also showed speed in tho shorter distances, while in the quarter It. Kirkwood finished second and beat in a number of fast young runners. V. Knight ran nicely to win tho 880 yards junior event, while tho open niilo saw C. Dawson win in convincing manner. Dawson is one of tho harriers who has impressed as being a likely track miler. A. Raper proved a "find" when he put the shot 29ft. with his first'throw. Ho has never competed in this event before, and with some correct training ho would improvo several feet on that distance. Hill Runs Well At the Domain, J. W. Savidan received a great reception from tho spectators when he raced in a brilliant winner by 15 yards in tho 3000 yards steeplechaso. Ho gave away starts up to 100 seconds. G. Hill again ran well to go through tho field and beat all but Savidan. Three heats wore again necessary for tho large field in the 75 yards sprint and in a closely-contested final, A. McLean just won from Rigg and Burton. Owing to injuries and illness the field for the annual relay race from tho Ferry Buildings to Papakura, run by the Calliope Club, was considerably reduced, and only two teams competed. Nevertheless a good race resulted and the record timb for tho distance was broken by 1m 22s by tho winning team, comprising S. Andrews, A. Clayton, W. Drummond and L. Lanigan. All four put up a fine performance. The Presbyterian harriers covered a long course across country, around Mount Roskill, Waikowhai and toward Avondalc, good form being shown generally. A long run-in over tho last mile saw J. Neil finish first of the fast pack, from L. ltice, and Wildespin lead homo tho slow pack from Taft and Clouston. Wrong Course Followed Tho University Club championship was run at Mission Bay over a difficult 6i course. Owing to tho leading bunch, comprising five runners, mistaking the trail after a couple of miles and missing a small part of tho course, tho event was declared no race, and by mutual consent will be re-run next Saturday. As expected H. E. Carter showed up best on Saturday and gave a good display of cross-country running, while next to him wero Jellie, Holmes, Hooper and Stuart, who all ran freely. Hooper and Jellie should again provide the strongest opposition for Carter when they meet again. Of those who completed the correct course the best form was shown by Kay, Watson and A. Graham, Kay particularly running well. The track at the Domain is now hardening very quickly and already there are a few track men doing light work. A. J. Elliot, after having had a complete rest from athletics, is now exercising in preparation for a hard season in which ho will make every effort to regain his two New Zealand sprint titles. McFarlane, his Canterbury victor, will be forced to do some fast times to defeat Elliot again. With the prospect of a trip to the Empire (panics resting on next season's performances there will be some keen competition and several national records will probably again be broken.
